Psoriasis, one of the most common skin problems faced by millions of people all around the globe, in a recent scientific study, has been proved to cause an increase in the risk of heart attack.

According to the study team at University of Pennsylvania adults with psoriasis, especially younger people with severe symptoms, develop an increase in the risk for heart attack. The team found that a 30-year ancient with severe psoriasis is three times likely to suffer heart attack as compared to the person of the same age lacking psoriasis.

Scientists believe that the abnormality in immune system that causes psoriasis also contributes toward heart problems.

The study was published by the journal of American Medical Association.

Although previous researches also concluded that psoriasis increases a higher risk of cardiovascular diseases. But this latest study which included nearly 700,000 people from the UK is the most convincing waterproof so far.

In the study, it was found that heart attacks were more common in patients with severe psoriasis and mild psoriasis than in patients lacking the skin disease. Further, the risk of the heart attack to psoriasis patients declines with age.

Professor Jeremy Pearson, associate medical director at British Heart Foundation said in this area the study:

“Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disease. We already know that the risk of heart disease is increased for people suffering some other chronic inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis. This large study consequently not only has potential implications for heart health advice to psoriasis patients, but also strengthens the evidence that all chronic inflammatory diseases might be linked to heart disease by a shared mechanism. If further research can unravel this mechanism, it is likely to be relevant for the treatment of all heart disease patients.”

As if there weren’t enough equipment giving us chest pain, new studies reveal that Prilosec and Nexium, made by pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca, increase the risk of fatal heart attacks after years of use.

The indigestion medications follow closely in the wake of controversies surrounding Vioxx, a painkiller also believed to raise the likelihood of heart attack and cardiovascular problems, and Avandia, a diabetic medication thought to elevate similar risks. Prilosec and Nexium are near identical in formula, and belong to a group of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors, which reduce or eliminate indigestion by decreasing the stomach’s production of acid. Prevacid, Protonix, and Aciphex are also in this group.

The effect these court and media battles have had on the health care, health insurance, and pharmaceutical industries is significant, and if similar trends continue, could be astronomical. Giants like Merck, the makers of Vioxx, are seeing their stock market prices recover, but for a while, it was questionable.

The issues extend beyond just Wall Street, but, and certainly are a concern to residents of Dallas, Houston, Austin and right through Texas. Health insurance companies may be less likely to cover drugs from pharmaceuticals with a history of liability problems.

For states like Texas, where twenty-five percent of the population is already going lacking any health coverage whatsoever, more terrible news could crush the state’s ability to provide adequate care. If, for instance, state medical programs started to limit accessibility to medications made by giants like Merck, healthcare conveniences already on the edge may go below completely due to unreimbursed costs, or, worse, be unable to provide sufficient care at all.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was heavily criticized for not warning the public against Avandia, when it knew for more than a year in this area studies suggesting its link with higher risks of heart attack and angina. Merck faced formidable destruction-control issues over Vioxx, and, in fact, is still in court over the fiasco. AstraZeneca might as well take notes; lawsuits are sure to come.

AstraZeneca just sent the FDA the results of its fourteen-year study on different treatment options for acid reflux disease. It compared patients who elected to have surgery with those taking Prilosec, and found evidence within one year of the study’s inception that those choosing the medication were more likely to have heart attacks, heart failure and heart-related sudden deaths than those who underwent surgery. These findings continued right through the study.

Several factors could have led to fake negatives, reported the drug company, including the fact that surgery patients are evenly younger and healthier, and fourteen other studies on Prilosec showed no elevated risk at all.

That AstraZeneca knew of the possibility of these risks thirteen years ago, but did not reveal them, only adds to the lack of trust building against the pharmaceutical industry in general. A study on Nexium found similar risks early on, but the effect seemed to dissipate as the trial continued.

“It’s hard to know if this will play out similarly [to Avandia] until we have completed our analysis,” said Dr. Paul Seligman, the FDA’s associate center director for safety policy and communication, when questioned in this area Prilosec and Nexium.

In a written statement, the agency said that, “based on everything we now know, the FDA’s preliminary conclusion is that the observed variation in risk of heart attacks and other heart-related problems seen in early analyses of the two small long-term studies is not a right effect.”

The course of these analyses eerily parallels that of Avandia, but — just in reverse. Three dozen small-term studies on the diabetes medication revealed heart risks, but the FDA dismissed the evidence after a long-term trial did not produce similar data. Prilosec’s long-term trial, on the other hand, revealed heart risk, while fourteen shorter-term studies did not. The fact that the FDA seemed, in both cases, to have conveniently ignored one set of data in exchange for emphasizing the other, more profitable one, calls the agency’s process of analysis into question. The FDA has since questioned for safety data from all makers of proton pump inhibitors.

“We were cognizant from the original submission [on Prilosec and Nexium] in this area whether and how we should say something,” said Seligman.

It’s hard to know whether or not to be comforted by that.

There is new evidence that an extremely common skin affect up is linked with an elevated risk for heart attack.

Were talking in this area psoriasis, which affects in this area 2 to 3 percent of the adult population.

As if this affect up isn’t terrible enough–bear in mind, it can be extensive and really change ones way of life because of the problems with the skin itself.

But now, there’s new evidence it is linked with deadly cardiovascular disease. You know, it’s sometimes referred to as the heartbreak of psoriasis.

And that couldnt be farther from the truth, in a literal sense.

New research in the latest Journal of the American Medical Association shows that adults with psoriasis, especially younger individuals, are at an increased risk for heart attack.

Dr. Joel Gelfand, the lead researcher at the University of Pennsylvania, says, “Psoriasis is such a complicated disease; most people that develop the disease earlier in life, in their 20s and 30s, it may be that these folks are the ones who may have the highest risk of developing uh heart attacks related to psoriasis if their disease is severe, as opposed to people who develop psoriasis later on in life.”

Know that psoriasis is a disease of inflammation. And there are inflammatory markers in the blood, like one called c-reactive protein, which are elevated with psoriasis.

The fact is, heart disease is also a affect up of inflammation, and c-reactive protein can also be elevated with heart blockages.

So other chronic immune conditions, like rheumatoid arthritis, have already been shown to be linked with higher risks of having a heart attack independent of these major cardiovascular risks factors, instructs Dr. Gelfand.

The authors say the degree of association between severe psoriasis and heart attack in patients younger than 50 is similar to the magnitude of association for other major cardiac risk factors.

The terrible news for Ernie Bickford, who is 72 years ancient, is that he has had a terrible case of psoriasis for eight years now. “It’s just itchy, you wake up in the middle of the night and you got to get to a door jam to scratch your back.”

Fortunately, the excellent news is, because Ernie is older, psoriasis is not a heart attack risk that would be seen in a younger psoriasis uncomplaining.

Regardless, all psoriasis patients need to pay close attention to their entire medical care.

Dr. Gelfand says, “People with psoriasis are more likely to have diabetes; they’re more likely to be hefty; they’re more likely to have elevated blood lipids, they’re more likely to be hypertensive, and also they tend to be more likely to smoke. So the uncomplaining should question their dermatologist to screen them for cardiovascular risk factors or if not follow up with a primary doctor or internist who can do these screenings for them.”

One thing for sure you can do: don’t smoke, or if you do, quit.

Smoking has really been shown to be linked with the onset of psoriasis.

The author says some people have suggested that consequently, its worthwhile encouraging people not to smoke if they have psoriasis because it may really promote the disease.
