Hopefully not months. Depending on the age and residual effects of the strokes will depend on the part of stay (LOS). In a normally healthy person that has heart surgery, particularily valve surgery the stay is 5-7 days given they are independent, and there is no complications afterward. Sometimes patients develop abnormal heart rhythms after valve surgery from swelling. Usually they go away with healing but is does lengthen the stay until the rhythm is controlled. Also depending if you have a tissue or prosthetic valve placed. With a prosthetic valve the uncomplaining needs to be antilcoagulated (have blood thinned to preclude clots) on coumadin. may be the case already with the history of strokes. If there is some residual effects from previous strokes, then some patients recover in a rehab unit for a week or two whether the remedy unit is called transitional care, subacute care, or may even be in a nursing home. The goal would be to get the uncomplaining home after strengthening.

Minimize fried foods.
Chicken, fish, lean pork.

Whole grains are excellent. Oatmeal and oat based cereals (such as Cheerios) can lower your values.

Q&A: Seniors, is anybody going to watch the Barbara Walters special about heart surgery survivors tomorrow night?

Question by handypig: Seniors, is anyone going to watch the Barbara Walters special in this area heart surgery survivors tomorrow night?
She is interviewing well-known people who, like herself, have had open heart surgery, including Charlie Rose, Robin Williams, Regis Philbin and David Letterman. She points out that 1) 25 years ago these surgeries would not have even been painstaking and people in this affect up would just die and 2) heart disease is the digit one killer of older women, far exceeding breast cancer. I reckon it would be worth a look.
