Question by : Is catheter ablation categorized as an open heart surgery?
Hi, I would just like to question if catheter ablation is categorize as an open heart surgery? I want to verify this because my friend needs an ablation to right his WPW which goes with SVT. We have to know if this will be covered by his medical insurance but they said that ablation cascade below open heart surgery and he has no coverage for that, but seeing all the similes of ablation, I do not believe that it is an open heart surgery. please enlighten me on this.

Thank you.

Open heart surgery is a surgery in which the uncomplaining’s chest is opened and surgery is performed on the heart. The term “open” refers to the chest, not to the heart itself. The heart may or may not be opened depending on the fastidious type of surgery.
Radiofrequency ablation is done using minimally invasive procedure.
Consult a cardiologist.

Q&A: how likely is it to develop chronic AF after open heart surgery?

Question by someguy: how likely is it to develop chronic AF after open heart surgery?
My father has had an open heart surgery two days ago (CABG). Since then, he had an AFIB in the CTU and was shocked three times. Next day, he was given a medication because his heart rate went up. Does this mean he will have a chronic AFIB ? will this AFIB last or is it common to have it once or twice post open heart surgery?

It’s a not uncommon sequelae of open CABG and may resolve by itself, by cardioversion, or having the rate CONROLLED medically., eg. with digoxin, etc.
