Is it normal to have low blood pressure after open heart surgery?

Question by Lisa: Is it normal to have low blood difficulty after open heart surgery?
My 71 yr ancient uncle (who I unfortunately don’t know that well) just had surgery on Monday (it’s now Wednesday night) and is having distress with his blood difficulty. It’s still too low, and isn’t adaptable itself, so he’s on a blood difficulty regulator. He’s obviously still in the hospital, I’m just curious how common it is for a heart uncomplaining to need a bp regulator and for how long.

Thanks!

this depends upon the surgerical technique done, if he had surgery below cardiopulmonary bypass, and spent long time on the bypass ,this may be the cause… i mean to howmuch there was cardioprotection intraoperatively… in addition to the base line cardiac stATUS OF YOUR UNCLE…

Hi, after surgery the blood difficulty is usually low because of loss of blood during the surgery. There are other causes as well such as the heart may not be pumping adequately, the blood vessels that hold blood may be open too much (vasodilation or allergic reactions, infection, drugs). Low blood difficulty should be treated promptly while a search is undertaken for the cause. Supportive treatment includes oxygen, intravenous fluids or blood, and drugs which increase the difficulty by acting on blood vessels or making the heart beat more strongly. It is very hard to say as to how long low blood difficulty persists after the surgery, lot depends on the uncomplaining health after the surgery.
